On July 3rd, 2024, Canada became an Associated Country in the EU's Horizon Europe framework program for research and innovation. Note that the association of Canada to Horizon Europe is for Pillar 2 of Horizon Europe only, which form the top-down open calls for international consortia to tackle global challenges. However, researchers and institutions in Canada continue to benefit from the bottom-up mobility opportunities in Pillar 1 by sending researchers to Europe on ERC grants and MSCA fellowships and receiving MSCA-PF Global Fellows for 12 to 24 months in Canada with a one-year mandatory return phase to Europe. With that in mind, we encourage individuals to take advantage of the existing Pillar 1 opportunities and to learn more below about the benefits of association to Pillar 2.

For reference: A transitional arrangement had been put in place for Canadian entities, meaning that from December 5th, 2023 to July 3rd, 2024, entities based in Canada could apply and be evaluated as prospective “beneficiaries” in Horizon Europe proposals for all calls implementing Pillar 2 in the budget 2024 onwards. As of July 3rd, 2024, Canada is now fully associated to Horizon Europe's Pillar 2 and successful applicants can sign the model grant agreement.
